Roccat Kone Pure Gaming Mouse Review

I am going to talk about a new mouse that I bought, but I can’t just jump into that without giving you some background, so bear with me. I am definitely a creature of habit and I am somewhat OCD about change. So it has taken me some time to decide that I needed a new gaming mouse. I have been using the same mouse, a Logitech MX518 for many, many years. So many most of you reading this, even if you are versed in gaming hardware, have likely not heard of it. In its prime the MX518 was THE gaming mouse to use, but times they are a changing. The MX518, while fine for “normal” use and light gaming, was starting to show its age and how far behind it is compared to the newer technology. It just doesn’t keep up with the high pace and accuracy required in the current First Person Shooters (FPS).

So I dove head first into finding a new gaming mouse. I want to tell you guys about a computer hardware company that I had never heard of before starting this adventure into review land. The company’s name is Roccat (@Roccat). After my experiences with Razer, I am very careful about buying from a computer hardware company that I am unfamiliar with. In other words, I did a ton of research. I read hundreds of customer reviews about computer mice. I also spent countless hours reading online “professional” reviews about the best gaming mice. I began by looking at the products offered by the common sources, i.e. I did a search on Amazon. The expected mice were there from Logitech and Razer, but I knew I didn’t want a Razer and I quickly learned from the customer feedback that Logitech seems to have some quality issues lately. This was surprising, since my MX518 is over ten years old and still works.

So I started to look at some of the other manufacturers. Long story short, I ultimately chose to buy a Roccat Kone Pure gaming mouse. I like it so much I wanted to share my thoughts about it. From what I read during my research, Roccat is dedicated to making quality gaming products and providing a high level of customer service. From my first impression and usage of the Kone Pure gaming mouse, I agree with all the positive reviews about these products. The mouse itself just feels right, not too heavy and not too light. Another big selling point is its performance. I wanted a faster mouse. When I say faster, I don’t mean DPI, I mean polling rate. Many marketers have convinced people that DPI should be the deciding factor when choosing a mouse, but I disagree. Polling rate is where it’s at. So you understand, polling rate is how often the mouse sends updates to the computer. So the faster it updates, the more accurate it is when you are moving it around fast, like when you are playing a fast paced game. The fastest polling rate that I could find is 1000hz, or 1ms response, which the Roccat Kone Pure has. For you DPI junkies out there, the Roccat will also go up to 8200 DPI.

I know some of you are saying, all this polling rate and dpi talk is fine, but what about the buttons? Since I was coming from the MX518, I wanted a somewhat simple mouse. I didn’t want too many buttons, but I did want it to have two on the thumb side. I also wanted the ability to adjust the dpi on the fly, preferably with physical buttons on the mouse. The Kone Pure is exactly what I was looking for. The “thumb buttons” are right where they should be and have a nice click when pressed. One of my complaints I had with the MX518 was the feel of the thumb buttons was too squishy, I wanted more a mechanical click. The Kone Pure delivers. Another feature, if you install the drivers from their website, is an audible indication when you change the DPI. Yes, you read that correctly, it tells you what DPI you just changed to when you click the button. The voice even sounds excited when you get to the really high DPI settings. It’s a little amusing really. It deserves to be mentioned that the texture of the mouse is also very nice; it has the soft feel that many mobile products have recently.

Ok, so I’ve told you about the search and the function of the mouse itself, but you may be asking if it made a difference in any games. It most definitely did for me. I used to play FPS games for hours a day, every day, and I even played on a competitive team for several years. So in my mind I used to be pretty good, well it was an eye opener when I jumped into a Battlefield 4 match recently. I was getting my butt handed to me every match. While I did understand that I was out of practice and needed to get the “touch” back, but this was ridiculous. It was almost embarrassing. This is the primary reason I decided to replace my mouse. Now I know you are probably thinking that I was blaming my poor abilities on the hardware I was using, and you are partially correct. Fortunately for me, replacing the mouse has made a night and day improvement in my performance. Admittedly, before I replaced the mouse I was fundamentally performing the correct actions or reactions in the game, but the older hardware was just not functioning as fast as it needed.

So if you are looking for a new gaming mouse, I highly recommend you check out the Roccat line and I personally attest to the feel and performance of the Roccat Kone Pure gaming mouse. 1. I am not a gamer but I am on the computer all the time, and I am like you very picky about my mouse – it has to work great and be fast – this looks like a good mouse from your review, but I am not sure about the cord 🙁 I have had the cordless mouse for several years and I find that when I go to someone’s house and use a corded mouse it drives me NUTS. Did you find that an issue at all? I love the fact that it’s very fast, I am one of those people that cannot stand to have slow moving equipment.

    • As a PC gamer I prefer a corded mouse. Although, I do understand what you mean. Most computer mice cords are kind of stiff and inhibit the movement of the mouse. Not so with the Roccat Kone Pure. The cord is made with a braided material and flexes easily. With that said, if I didn’t play computer games, I would probably use a cordless mouse.

  2. nice review, nicely written and although I’m not a gamer now, if I were I would buy this gaming mouse just on your review alone since I know how much study about it you put in. I’m sure my grandson would like it though because he is a computer gamer.

  3. I like the Roccat products, they have some excellent designs. I was looking for a good mouse earlier this year and I ended up buying the Razor R.A.T.9 mouse because of all the adjustability it has. I had a Logitec mouse, but it didn’t fit my hand at all, so I gave it to my son for his computer. It is amazing that mice have their own processors and are programmable with different buttons. Big difference since my first mouse I had on my Apple Macintosh SE. Thanks for the excellent review and all the info. Good luck and I wish you well with your blog.
