The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

I want to tell you, my readers, about a new movie, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I haven’t done a lot of movie reviews, but some movies are too good not tell people about. I promise I’m not going to provide any information that can’t be seen or figured out from the trailers; so no spoilers here. For anyone familiar with the Lord of the Rings movies or with Peter Jackson, this will probably not surprise you, but this movie is amazing.

If you are not familiar with the Lord of the Rings books or movies, the director Peter Jackson, or with the first Hobbit movie or book, let me expand your geekiness. J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings books and they are some of the best fantasy literature ever written. No joke, they are incredible. So even if you have seen all the movies, you should still read the books. The Hobbit Trilogy is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings. It has many of the same characters and adds quite a bit to the expansive story. I suggest that you watch the first Hobbit movie before seeing this one, as it builds on the story and characters.

The first Hobbit movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey begins the story of our hero Bilbo Baggins. The newest Hobbit movie, and the second in the series, continues the story of Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves as we follow them on their quest. If you have seen a trailer or read the book, you know that our adventurers are on a journey to confront Smaug, a very large dragon. Large is probably an understatement and once you see the movie you will understand why I say that. Needless to say, Bilbo does find his way to Smaug, face to face in fact. I will have to leave it at that, but I urge you to watch this movie. It is especially remarkable if you get a chance to see it on the big screen.

  1. My son absolutely loves Lord of the rings and the hobbit so I can’t wait to take him to see this movie. He has the video games and books so I know he like this one.

  2. I have seen the trailer for this movie and to me it looks like it will be a pretty good one. I know my daughter will want to go see it for sure.

  3. My boyfriend wants to see this, but we are unsure if we should wait until it comes out in DVD. So expensive to go to movies these days. This is about the only movie we are even considering going to the theater for, however.

    • I agree, it is expensive. When I took my sons (3) to see it, it cost around $60 for the tickets, drinks, and popcorn. I still think this movie was worth it. Especially if you are a Peter Jackson or Hobbit fan. My boys talked about this movie for hours after we saw it and now they can’t wait for the final movie to come out.

  4. It was worth it for the scene where Smaug gets dipped in gold. As an amateur metalsmither, I thought that was friggin awesome.
